Thoracic Compression Fracture

Compression fractures are often caused by trauma to the spine, such as a car accident or fall, but can be caused by osteoporosis weakening the bones of the spine.

Anywhere from mild to severe pain may be felt in the back, abdominals, arms, and/or legs and worsens with movement. Limitations of movement, swelling, numbness, and tingling may be also present. While severe fractures require surgery, often a combination of rest and conservative treatment is effective in resolving the symptoms and restoring function.

If the fracture is caused by osteoporosis, then treatment focusing on increasing bone strength is appropriate normally this is done through weight bearing strength training. Also not to be overlooked, is a focus on balance as falling can cause fractured hips and thoracic compression fractures. Sport and Spine Rehab can design a program for you to avoid these conditions!
