The hip joint is the articulation of the pelvis and the femur. The hip capsule contains the articulation of the femoral head within the acetabulum, or the socket of the hip bone, as well as the associated hip ligaments. There are four ligaments of the hip joint being the extracapsular ligaments and the intracapsular ligament. The extracapsular ligaments consist of the iliofemoral, ischiofemoral, and pubofemoral ligaments which attach to the pubic bone. The intracapsular ligament is attached to the acetabulum.
Hip joint dysfunction is when the hip capsule and its associated ligaments become very tight and begin to restrict motion. With motion restriction, it is natural for pain to eventually follow.
