According to U.S. News and World Report, around 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail. Don’t let this happen to you! Read on to learn how to create SMART goals and set yourself up for success. 

Make Your Goals SMART Goals 

The biggest factor in reaching your goals is to make sure that they are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic and Timely. Here is how bring these to life:

Is your goal… 

Specific

Be as specific as possible when creating your goal. Avoid umbrella statements such as: I want to be more fit, or I want to eat better. Instead, consider something like: I want to gain 5 pounds of muscle.

Measurable

There needs to be a way to measure your goal so you can track progress over time. Options for measurement include body analysis (lean body mass, fat mass, waist to hip ratio, etc.), performance measurements (weight lifted, time it takes to complete a run, etc.), or any other creative way you can measure your goal.

Action-Oriented

Make sure there is action involved with your goal. You want something to happen, but what action are you doing to make that happen. Saying you want to lose 10 lbs. of body fat is a great start, but are you doing that by resistance training, running, playing a sport, changing your nutrition, or a combination?

Realistic

Be honest with yourself. Set a goal that will be challenging; but make it something you can realistically achieve in the time frame you’ve created.

Timely

Have some kind of time frame you want to achieve your goal by. Don't leave it open-ended, because you’re more likely to put it off and procrastinate.
Set Goals Both Big and Small

Dreams and big goals are important. For some of us, that’s what drives us to achieve. If you have a goal in mind that could take months or even years to reach, set smaller SMART goals (or benchmarks) along the way to keep you on track.
